Reps Move To Establish Southwest Development Commission, Bill Passed Second Reading… Read Details

The bill to establish Southwest Development Commission has passed second reading in the House of Representatives.

The bill sponsored by Olufemi Falaye passed the second reading and is said to have been sent to the committee on Judiciary for further legislative actions.

According to Falaye, it is pertinent for the region to have its own commission because its enormous contributions to the development of the nation and impacts on the educational system of the country back in the 1950s.

He added that it is necessary for the bill to be passed into law as the most widely celebrated western education we all appreciate today has its offshoot in Southwest as a result of the slave trade that occured in the region during the colonial era.

Meanwhile, the Bill for the establishment of the commission was sponsored by about 80 lawmakers from the six geographical zones of the country.

Co-sponsors of the Bill include Abdulrazaq Namdas, Nkiruka Onyejeocha, Sada Soli, Nduyok Francis Charles, Kabir Alhassan Rurum, Victor Nwokolo, Nzoma, Nkem Abonta, Bashiru Dawodu, James Faleke.

Reps members, Tahir Mongunu, Onyejeocha, Yusuf Bubs, Ossai Nicholas Ossai among others also gave their support for the establishment of the commission, while urging other law members and Speaker of the house, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila to quickly give their consent to the Bill.

Despite the 24 hours curfew imposed by the state governor, Godwin Obaseki, Edo people blocked the ugbowo Lagos road.

They also chased away police officers deployed to Uniben main gate this afternoon.

While in Satan Market, Sapele Road, Benin City. Some protesters were seem engaging soldiers in a gun duel. A woman was reportedly shot dead in the process.

BREAKING: Lagos Government Imposes 24-hour Curfew

Following the raging #ENDSARS protests and demonstrations, Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has declared a 24-hour curfew.

Sanwo-Olu announced this on his official Twitter handle on Tuesday.

He said: “As government who is alive to it’s responsibility and has shown commitment to the #EndSars movement,we will not watch and allow anarchy in our state.

“I therefore declare a 24 hour curfew in the state starting from 4pm today,nobody except emergency responders and essential service providers should be found on the streets.”
